Summer vacation time is here, which means that many homeowners will be going away on vacation. While you're away relaxing, burglars are hard at work taking advantage of the opportunity of increasingly unoccupied homes. Since mid-December, local police departments have reported an increase in the number of burglaries and car thefts, with summer be the most active time for thieves.

Some simple tips can help your house from becoming a target for thieves:

  • Use timers to have lights, a radio and a tv come on in the evening when you are not at home

  • Install motion activated spotlights outside your house

  • Do not keep jewelry or cash in traditional places such as the master bedroom, and if you have a safe make sure it is mounted to the wall or floor so it can't be carried out by a thief

  • Store ladders in a basement or locked garage so that a burglar doesn't discover it in the backyard and use it to access a second story window

  • Keep bushes and shrubs trimmed around windows and doors, and make sure entry points are visible from the street

  • Install steel reinforced entry doors with deadbolt locks, and be sure windows are locked when you're away

  • Avoid installing a mirror by the entry door that a burglar could use to check if an alarm system is armed

  • Hire someone to cut the lawn, pick up newspapers, and stop the mail delivery when you'll be away to give your home a lived in look

  • Avoid posting travel plans on social media including Facebook and checking in on geo-tracking apps such as FourSquare

  • Lock all cars left in the driveway and remove keys from the vehicle, or a thief could use a garage door opener to access your home (and also possibly steal your car!)

  • If you have an alarm system - use it!

  • Call 911 if you see someone who doesn't fit into your neighborhood lurking about, hear breaking glass or an audible alarm, see a vehicle driving aimlessly through the neighborhood, or if you see or hear anything out of the ordinary

By following these simple tips, a burglary may be prevented. Be safe and enjoy your vacation!
